I'm no physician, but I know that the more sugar you consume, the more your body wants. You think your craving is a lack of willpower, but what you've really got is a chemical imbalance.

The biggest imbalance for many of us, though, is in the amount of thought we devote to food and weight. If I could add up the time I've spent worrying about what I just ate and what I shouldn't have just eaten, feeling guilty about it, and getting down on myself about why I'm not where I want to be, it would probably be several years of my life. The Fat Flush Plan is a bestseller about weight loss. It is a strict diet plan featuring a low calorie diet and recipes are included. The key part of this diet is the high intake of flaxseed oils, eight ounces or more a day, and other fats. Flaxseed oil tastes like..ummm...nasty cooking oil. I can't stomach it. This diet calls for 8 oz a day of this stuff!

The Fast Fat Loss Plan opts for a much more moderate approach to fat consumption. Juice is also suggested on the Fat Flush Diet Plan, 8 oz a day. For most people, drinking high calorie drinks is the quick way to get fat. The Fast Fat Loss Plan does suggest drinking juice but only eating the fruit itself.

For some people, the high flaxseed oil diet is great, but for some, it can make for very messy and frequent bowl movements. It takes some getting used to that is for sure. In its first two-week phase, the plan is a rigid, low calorie (1,100-1,200 calories/day), low-carb (no grains or starchy vegetables) diet. Phase two lets you increase your calories to 1,500 and add two "friendly carbs." Phase three, the "lifestyle program," moderately adds more dairy, carbs, and calories. Gittleman promotes walking and recommends strength training in phase three.

The book includes 41 recipes such as Grilled Lamb Chops with Cinnamon and Coriander, Breakfast Egg Fu Yung, and Cumin Sautéed Scallops. The Fat Flush Plan is recommended for dieters willing to commit to a super strict plan for weight loss.

Here is a real person's review: "I bought this book, along with the cookbook, a month ago and followed the diet plan closely for the first two weeks (I lost 13lbs.) and loosely for another 7-10 days for a total weight loss of 27lbs. It is not the easiest diet to follow, as the flax oil tastes really icky and the flaxseed fiber supplement drink is equally hard to swallow, but if you actually do what the author suggests, you Will lose weight. What I found the most difficult was eating eggs without salt and topping my protein portions with the flax oil as suggested. I think (I cannot prove it with personal research), that flax oil is much the same as linseed oil. It's not the initial taste, but the lingering aftertaste that put me off. I did learn how to cut back on carbs, fats and sodium (it's amazing what you can do with mustard and hot sauce) and did manage to modify my long term dietary intake, but after a month, I wanted to taste a grilled steak with garlic salt and maybe even a touch of butter, not to mention a crusty bit of bread! If you are more committed and have more willpower than I do, and can handle large amounts of flax oil, you can really lose a significant amount of weight on this plan and alter your palate."

Sesamin

Sesamin is a lignan (a lignan is a chemical compound known as a phytoestrogen) and activates the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activator Receptor Alpha (PPAR alpha). There are 3 different classes of PPAR's:

Although first identified in human urine in 19481 and tissues in 19546 it wasn't until the mid 90's when Dr. Henry Lardy began the excellent research on what he called "Ergosteroids"7.

The nomenclature of the ergosteroid family emerged due to their influences on energy metabolism; indeed this area in particular will form the core of our discussion on 7-keto. After a paper was released showing that DHEA could bring about a thermoginetic effect in rats, it wasn't long before both the nutraceutical and scientific world began the search for an effective and "safe alternative to ephedrine" for fat loss. In essence, a chemical that could confer the positive health benefits of DHEA.

Results demonstrated that at all doses, 7-keto in comparison to a placebo presented no substantial impact on clinical blood markers of toxicity and health. This data was supported in further human trials12-13.

Until recently, I have really struggled to find any products that are based on good science with clinical trial data to back their seemingly pie-in-the-sky claims. You see, if we decrease the number of H+ that can be used effectively in producing energy by increasing how much leaks out of the pores of the mitochondria, energy will be lost as heat. This process is more widely known as "thermogenesis." This chain of events is also eloquently referred to as mitochondria uncoupling. Show Me The Science: Proof Behind 7-Keto At the end of 2003, we had our proof of 7-Keto's effectiveness in the form of three solid human clinical trials. These trials have provided our first glimpse into the exciting body-composition changing potential of 7-Keto. The first of the three studies was performed by Doug Kalman, a nutritionist from Miami, who investigated the influence of 100 mg of 7-Keto given twice a day in combination with 60 minutes of exercise per week. A group of 30 adults, 28 of them women, participated in the study. At the end of the study, those on 7-Keto lost 336% more weight than those on the placebo-on the exact same exercise regime. In real terms, that's a loss of an extra 4.4 lbs over eight short weeks. The second study in the series assessed a formula containing 7-oxo-DHEA, again the impact of 200 mg/d, with a calorie controlled diet and exercise regimen versus a placebo in overweight subjects. Measured parameters included weight, body composition, and basal metabolic rate (BMR). This study showed that 7-Keto leads to an average weight loss of around one pound per week.

The most recent and final study was presented by Dr. John L. Zenk, the leading researcher in the 7-Keto field when it comes to body composition changes (e.g., fat loss), at one of the world's most distinguished conferences: The Federation of Experimental and Applied Physiology. Just look at the results experienced over eight weeks with a 7-Keto-containing formula (Lean System 7):

Results demonstrated that at all doses, 7-Keto, in comparison to a placebo, presented no substantial impact on clinical blood markers of toxicity and health. This data was supported in further human trials, proving 7-Keto is not only effective but safe! Dose & Timing Pharmacokinetic data reveals that based on a single 100-mg dose, 7-Keto peaks in concentration in plasma after around two hours and then returns back to baseline concentrations after around five to six hours. Therefore, the simple message is to take your 7-Keto around two hours prior to exercise because at this time, you will get the greatest thermogenic fat-burning effect. Using anywhere from 100 to 200 mg a day should be sufficient. I read both this book and the follow up book. Extreme Fat Smash Diet. Which is the same book just stricter.

I liked both books. They are a quick read, about 20 minutes and could have easily been a magazine article rather than a book (or two books). The first half of the book is the general and sprcific diet and exercise (in general terms) information. The second half of each book are about 50 recipees.

No picures or illustrations. The recipees could really have used some pictutres. The book offers clear, concise information. There are lots of lists that help things stay organized. The book was easy to read and grasp. Also is included about 50 low-calorie recipees. Dr. Ian has appeared on The View VH1 and other television shows numerous times. His high profiile has helped drive this papaerback to BESTSELLER status.

His approach is no nonsense. He is into natural natural foods and frequent meals. Hour long workouts and weight training on top of that. Both books are bestsellers. The diet is strict. And you learn to use it in 3 phases. If you fail at one phase, you go back and repeat the previous phase. It is strict, but it works. If you used this system I would say you would successfully lose weight. He is very clear on what you can and cannot eat, lots of lists. I think both the books are worth a read even if you get them at the library and just read them there. Both books contain recipees in the back half of the book.

"Let me start saying that I have read a lot of books on weight loss and I have my own experience in the weight loss game, having being able to loss more than 200 lbs and shrink my waist (from 44 to 32) in about eight months, and I have been able to keep in good shape for more than 6 years.

I believe that for a Weight loss program to be effective in the long term it has to be realistic and it has to be practical and easy to follow, so one can stick to it in order to gradually obtain what we ultimately want: Burn unwanted body fat.

I found that the book dieting and exercising plan and guidelines are too rigorous, what can be a problem for anyone not used to training or watching his/her diet, but wanting to start improving their quality of life. The food limitations can be dramatic and the exercise goal is to train intensively for one whole hour five days a week, in addition to add a lifting weight routine at least twice a week. This could be just unrealistic for most people, either because they are not use to training or just because their family and/or work duties do not have that much time to spare. The changes in life style must be made gradually if we want to succeed in establishing those changes as habits for life. At the end you may even surpass your own expectations but you have to star with little steps changes. This is not a bad book, but it could be hard to follow.

Since you are checking this book I have to guess that you are interested in losing weight, getting in better shape or just be healthier, so I will share my own experience in the weight lose game:

My own successful personal experience in weight loss is based on strategies to boost metabolism. Don't stress yourself, eat frequently, eat just what you need each time, and choose wisely what you are going to eat, supplement your diet. Yet simple and it works. I loss more than 200 lbs and shrink my waist (from 44 to 32), and I have been able to keep in good shape since then. Article #30. Body For Life. Paperback 2003. Best Seller by Bill Phillips.

Note: This book, Body for Life, became a series of best selling books. Always top notch information and wonderfully photographed. I think Bill did a nice job with the series. Here is a review from a person who read and used The Body For Life Program.

Body for Life" is an excellent book if you're a fitness beginner who's trying to figure out how to get in shape and stay in shape or, perhaps, someone who's been working out and/or dieting for a while and doesn't seem to be making much headway towards losing weight and getting in shape. Phillips does a good job of explaining the basic building blocks of fitness and of debunking a lot of the more prevalent fitness myths. He covers the proper way to exercise, both aerobics and weight training, proper diet, not some fad diet but rather how to eat real food in a healthy way, and how to motivate yourself and keep yourself motivated to stick to your goals.

There are a few caveats, however.

This is a very basic book. Don't think you're going to read this book and then know everything you need to know about fitness. It gives you a good foundation to build on but it doesn't go much beyond that. In my opinion that's a good thing given the book's target audience of fitness beginners. It gives you enough information to get started but it doesn't overwhelm you with data. Be aware that once you get into the program and have a better feel for your specific needs, you may find yourself seeking other books for more information but with the information you get from "Body for Life", you'll be able to make better selections of what type of books to look for. If you're already in good shape, chances are you already know everything that's in this book and if there is something you don't know, it won't be worth the price to find out.

Phillips owns a company which manufactures nutritional supplements. Not surprisingly he pushes the use of supplements in this book. There's nothing wrong with using supplements (they work) but they're expensive and not really necessary. They may accelerate the process but you'll still get into shape following the program without them.

Fitness is a lifelong commitment. Don't look at the title of the book and think you're going to get into perfect shape in only 12 weeks. Phillips' program is about using those 12 weeks to develop a fitness program you can stick to for the rest of your life. Ideally, when you finish one 12 week program you'll immediately begin another 12 week program and so on until it's not a 12 week program but a way of life.

If you're a fitness beginner and not certain where to begin or someone who's been working out for a little while but doesn't seem to be making any headway towards your fitness goals, this is the book for you. It offers good solid information on the basics of fitness and how to set and achieve your goals. I highly recommend this book.

Article #31. Weight Watchers. An overview.

Weight Watchers is an international company that offers various dieting products and services to assist weight loss and maintenance. It now operates in about 30 countries around the world, generally under the name "Weight Watchers" translated into the local language.

From 1978 until 1999, the Weight Watchers company was owned by the H. J. Heinz Company, which continues to produce packaged foods bearing the Weight Watchers brand name (and with points values clearly identified). Weight Watchers was acquired in a leveraged buyout in 1999 and went public in 2001.

 

The Organization:

The programs are supplemented by optional support groups which meet regularly and provide assistance to those trying to meet weight-loss goals.

Weight Watchers usually has a 'minimum weight' level, to protect those who are not actually overweight. If those interested in Weight Watchers are above this 'minimum weight' then they can set up their weight loss goal with their local Weight Watchers leader. Height, age, and beginning weight are recorded in order to establish their goal weight.

Once a member reaches his or her goal weight and maintains that weight (within two pounds) for six weeks he/she becomes a Lifetime Weight Watchers member. Lifetime Members must weigh in at their first Meeting of every month. If the member weighs more than 2 pounds over the weight goal at the first weigh-in of the month, he/she will be charged the weekly fee, but will not have to pay another registration fee. Part of the success of Weight Watchers members keeping weight off is the continued free support of their weekly meetings.

Weight Watchers Online is another option for dieters, where for a monthly fee they have access to all support materials and programs through E-Tools. This alternative is for people who don't want to attend meetings, and is a more independent approach to weight loss. The support system for WW Online is a message board, where dieters can post support and share advice. Although using WW Online has been proven successful for many Weight Watchers members, research has shown the members lose three times more weight by attending regular meetings.[citation needed]

In some areas, including the Philadelphia metropolitan area in the United States, Weight Watchers meetings are operated by a locally-franchised organization rather than by Weight Watchers International.

The Plan of Weight Watchers:

In part as a response to the popularity of plans like Atkins and South Beach, Weight Watchers has recently developed a separate plan, known as the Core Plan. This plan classifies certain types of food as "core," and permits participants to eat core foods with the restriction that they should only eat these foods "until full. not stuffed" Core foods are a list of healthy foods from all the food groups, including fruits, vegetables, fat free dairy, lean meats, and whole grains. Non-core foods are assigned the usual point values, and participants are given an allotment of 21 - 35 non-core points that they can eat in a week. Participants can also earn points by exercising to 'spend' on non core foods.

The Flex Plan

Under this plan, participants are assigned a set number of points they are allowed to consume per day based on their current height, weight, age and activity level. The number of points allowed may be increased with sufficient exercise, as in the Core Plan. Participants are given an allotment of 35 "flex" points, that they may use above and beyond the per-day points, that can be eaten in a week.

The Flex system is, in essence, a simple way to quantify a participant's calorie intake and energy expenditure. Various servings of food are assigned a specific number of points, and various types of exercise are assigned negative numbers of points; a program participant is allocated a certain number of points per day, with that number based on the individual's current weight and weight goals.

The effect of this is that the participant is not restricted from eating any specific type of food, but they must stay under their total point value for the week. This stands in marked contrast to diet approaches such as the South Beach diet or the Atkins diet, under which some foods are completely forbidden and others are permitted in theoretically unlimited amounts. The participant's ability to factor exercise into the plan increases its flexibility: the participant can eat more points as long as he offsets them with exercise, or eat fewer points if he prefers not to exercise.

Many Weight Watchers proponents enjoy the Flex system precisely because no food is out of bounds, as long as it is eaten in moderation, and because exercise can be factored in. (In the UK, Weight Watchers advertises under the slogan "Where no food is a sin"; this is a reference to its chief competitor Slimming World's system of giving some food "sin" values.) Others, however, dislike the record-keeping that the plan imposes on the participant, who must essentially keep track of the points value of everything they eat; they prefer other plans that place restrictions on types of food rather than amounts of food.

The Points System:

The POINTS formula

The current formula for calculating the POINTS content of a specific food serving is copyrighted information available only to members.[citation needed] Some people still use the former formula described in U.S. Patent 6,040,531 :

p(c,f,r) = round \left( \frac{c}{50} + \frac{f}{12} - \frac{\min\{r,4\}}{5} \right)

Where p is the number of points, c is the number of calories, f is the grams of fat, and r is the grams of dietary fiber (if the dietary fiber is greater than four, use four). The points value is always an integer, with fractional values rounded to the nearest point. An alternative format, mentioned in the patent and used on some websites, rounds values to the nearest half-point.

 

Calculation aids

New members are given a cardboard slide rule to assist in calculating point values: by reading the nutrition label on any food package and quickly adjusting three of the slide rule scales for Calories, Fat, and Fiber, the points are easily determined by inspection of the fourth scale. In addition, a simple calculator is available that allows a member to quickly enter the Calories, Fat, and Fiber and immediately see the resultant points.

A small paperback book is available for purchase that lists thousands of foods for sale in Fast Food outlets, restaurant chains, and even generic restaurant foods, e.g. "Mexican: Refried Beans, 1/2 cup" and the corresponding point value. This is for use in cases where the nutritional label is not available.

Alternative formulas

An early version of the POINTS system did not limit the fiber "credit" to four grams. Another variation, which may be explained by rounding, is that the "POINTSfinder" manual calculator distributed at Weight Watchers meetings does not reach a POINTS value of 1 until after 70 calories have been reached, rather than 50 as the formula would indicate. As a result, point boundaries are 20 calories (or 4.8 fat grams) higher than might be expected. Though the patent mentions possibly using 70 rather than 50 as the single point baseline, that method is said to be intended for use by dieters who do not use fiber as a "point enhancer" (reducer).

More recent versions of the program, such as that described in U.S. Patent 6,878,885 , take exercise and physical activity into account to grant additional points in the daily allowance.

Article #31. The New FDA Food Pyramid. Government Guidelines for nutrition explained.

The Food Pyramid idea has been around along time. THE USDA has released a NEW Food Pyramid and it's alot better than the old one. It still has some flaws (don't drink processed fruit juice, it makes you fat. Avoid canned fruit and so on) and other little things I don't like, but overall it's a winner. The Food Pyramid is not the Food Pyramid we remember. THe Pyramid idea with foods "stacked" onm ech other has benn abandoned for more of a pie chart idea. The new Food Pyramid is a much more holistic approach to eating and even includes exercises recomendations. There was no exercise in MY OLD Food Pyramid. I am glad to see it in there. I hope we can brain wash the youth of this country with the ideas of the new Food Pyramid so that they stop eating all the junk food.

Below is a detailed outline of the NEW Food Pyramid and contains some very valuable information. Over all I rate it 1000 times better than the OLD Food Pyramid.

The What foods are in the grain group?

Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tortillas, and grits are examples of grain products.

Grains are divided into 2 subgroups, whole grains and refined grains.

Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel -- the bran, germ, and endosperm. Examples include:
  • whole-wheat flour
  • bulgur (cracked wheat)
  • oatmeal
  • whole cornmeal
  • brown rice
Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ. This is done to give grains a finer texture and improve their shelf life, but it also removes dietary fiber, iron, and many B vitamins. Some examples of refined grain products are:

Most refined grains are enriched. This means certain B vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid) and iron are added back after processing. Fiber is not added back to enriched grains. All fluid milk products and many foods made from milk are considered part of this food group. Foods made from milk that retain their calcium content are part of the group, while foods made from milk that have little to no calcium, such as cream cheese, cream, and butter, are not. Most milk group choices should be fat-free or low-fat.

Selection Tips

Choose fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese. If you choose milk or yogurt that is not fat-free, or cheese that is not low-fat, the fat in the product counts as part of the discretionary calorie allowance.

If sweetened milk products are chosen (flavored milk, yogurt, drinkable yogurt, desserts), the added sugars also count as part of the discretionary calorie allowance.

For those who are lactose intolerant, lactose-free and lower-lactose products are available. These include hard cheeses and yogurt. Also, enzyme preparations can be added to milk to lower the lactose content. Calcium-fortified foods and beverages such as soy beverages or orange juice may provide calcium, but may not provide the other nutrients found in milk and milk products.

What are “oils”?

Oils are fats that are liquid at room temperature, like the vegetable oils used in cooking. Oils come from many different plants and from fish. Some common oils are:

  • sunflower oil
Some oils are used mainly as flavorings, such as walnut oil and sesame oil. A number of foods are naturally high in oils, like:

Foods that are mainly oil include mayonnaise, certain salad dressings, and soft (tub or squeeze) margarine with no trans fats. Most oils are high in monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats, and low in saturated fats. Oils from plant sources (vegetable and nut oils) do not contain any cholesterol. In fact, no foods from plants sources contain cholesterol.

A few plant oils, however, including coconut oil and palm kernel oil, are high in saturated fats and for nutritional purposes should be considered to be solid fats.

    What are discretionary calories?

    You need a certain number of calories to keep your body functioning and provide energy for physical activities. Think of the calories you need for energy like money you have to spend.  Each person has a total calorie “budget.”  This budget can be divided into “essentials” and “extras.”

    With a financial budget, the essentials are items like rent and food.  The extras are things like movies and vacations.  In a calorie budget, the “essentials” are the minimum calories required to meet your nutrient needs.  By selecting the lowest fat and no-sugar-added forms of foods in each food group you would make the best nutrient “buys.”  Depending on the foods you choose, you may be able to spend more calories than the amount required to meet your nutrient needs.  These calories are the “extras” that can be used on luxuries like solid fats, added sugars, and alcohol, or on more food from any food group.  They are your “discretionary calories.”

    Each person has an allowance for some discretionary calories.  But, many people have used up this allowance before lunch-time!  Most discretionary calorie allowances are very small, between 100 and 300 calories, especially for those who are not physically active.  For many people, the discretionary calorie allowance is totally used by the foods they choose in each food group, such as higher fat meats, cheeses, whole milk, or sweetened bakery products. 

    You can use your discretionary calorie allowance to:
    • Eat more foods from any food group than the food guide recommends.
    • Eat higher calorie forms of foods—those that contain solid fats or added sugars.  Examples are whole milk, cheese, sausage, biscuits, sweetened cereal, and sweetened yogurt.
    • Add fats or sweeteners to foods.  Examples are sauces, salad dressings, sugar, syrup, and butter.
    • Eat or drink items that are mostly fats, caloric sweeteners, and/or alcohol, such as candy, soda, wine, and beer.
    For example, assume your calorie budget is 2,000 calories per day.  Of these calories, you need to spend at least 1,735 calories for essential nutrients, if you choose foods without added fat and sugar.  Then you have 265 discretionary calories left.  You may use these on “luxury” versions of the foods in each group, such as higher fat meat or sweetened cereal.  Or, you can spend them on sweets, sauces, or beverages.  Many people overspend their discretionary calorie allowance, choosing more added fats, sugars, and alcohol than their budget allows.
What are "solid fats"?

Solid fats are fats that are solid at room temperature, like butter and shortening. Solid fats come from many animal foods and can be made from vegetable oils through a process called hydrogenation.

How are solid fats different from oils?

Solid fats contain more saturated fats and/or trans fats than oils. Oils contain more monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated (PUFA) fats. Look for foods that are low in saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol, to help reduce your risk of heart disease. Trans fats can be found in many cakes, cookies, crackers, icings, margarines, and microwave popcorns. Foods containing partially-hydrogenated vegetable oils usually contain trans fats.

Saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol tend to raise “bad” (LDL) cholesterol levels in the blood, which in turn increases the risk for heart disease. To lower risk for heart disease, cut back on foods containing saturated fats, trans fats and cholesterol.

Some common solid fats are:

  • butter
  • beef fat (tallow, suet)
  • chicken fat
  • pork fat (lard)
  • stick margarine
  • shortening
Foods high in solid fats include:
  • many cheeses
  • creams
  • ice creams
  • well-marbled cuts of meats

  • many baked goods (such as cookies, crackers, donuts, pastries, and croissants)
In some cases, the fat in these foods is invisible. Regular cheese and whole milk are high in solid fat, even though it is not visible.

Most solid fats are high in saturated fats and/or trans fats and have less monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats. Animal products containing solid fats also contain cholesterol.

So that is the overall look at the NEW Food Pyramid. You can see it's a really healty and smart approach to eating. I hope this system is taught in the schools. The sections on BAD FATS is great. Our kids are in danger from the fast food companies and processed snacks all kids love. Salt, fat and sugar. These foods are health dangers and it is importnat to start teaching awareness in kindergarden and beyond to our children. The NEW Food Pyramid is a breath of fresh air from the old archaic system. Good job USDA!
